Serevi High Performance Training Camp Series

from USA Rugby:

SEATTLE, Wash. — As part of the USA Rugby Academy, Serevi Rugby® has announced dates and locations for its 2014 series of High Performance Training Camps aimed at identifying top players and providing a specific development pathway to the men’s and women’s U.S. National Teams. On behalf of USA Rugby, Serevi will host a series of seven stops across the country to find and develop the nation’s top young rugby players and crossover athletes. U.S. National Team coaches will participate throughout the program to help identify young players who may be invited to USA Rugby Academy Elite Residence Camps during summer 2014 run by Serevi.

“Our High Performance Training Camps allow aspiring players to be seen in competitive formats by national team and Serevi coaches, while challenging and calibrating themselves against other players,” said Ross Young, CEO of Serevi Rugby. “Because our programs are aligned the national high performance standards, the skills and training players will receive will put them on a pathway for higher levels of rugby including collegiate and potentially national team consideration.”

The USA Rugby Academy 2014 series of High Performance Training Camps includes stops in:

Glendale, CO February 1-2
Atlanta, GA February 14-16
Boston, MA March 1-2
San Diego, CA March 9
College Park, MD March 15-16
New Orleans, LA April 12-13
Minneapolis, MN May 3-4

The High Performance Training Camps emphasize skill development, unit skills, situational awareness and decision-making for seasoned players, all while providing opportunities for high-potential crossover athletes new to rugby.

WHAT WE WILL FOCUS ON:

  • Execution and development of core rugby skills
  • Decision making ability
  • Creativity
  • Performance-critical areas for National Team prospects

WHY SHOULD I GO?:

We help athletes raise their games. Whether you’re a high school athlete looking to make varsity, an athlete looking to play competitive college rugby or a promising player with aim on the National Teams, we will develop the performance-critical skills and decision making to help you meet your goal.
We segment athletes by age and ability to ensure a proper development opportunity for each player. We make every attempt to cater to each player’s unique mix of ability and ambition.
This programming aims to pair able and ambitious athletes with the very best coaches. The atmosphere begins to mirror that of a National Team camp, introducing athletes to the demands and standards required at the international level.
We evaluate athletes for both the short and long-term with an eye on the USA 15s and Olympic 7s pools. Those athletes demonstrating an appropriate mix of skill, athleticism and potential will be invited to our multi-day Elite Residence Camps where they will train in a high-performance environment with National Team coaches.

“Young men and women attending our camps will receive a unique national team experience being able to work with Serevi and U.S. national team coaches on a very personal level,” said Justin Fitzpatrick, Serevi coach and Men’s Eagles assistant coach. “We segment players by age and skill to maximize each individual’s learning and potential based on their ability and ambition.”

National team coaches including Ric Suggitt (Women’s Eagles Sevens), Mike Tolkin (Men’s Eagles), Matt Hawkins (Men’s Eagles Sevens), and their high performance staff will attend the Training Camps to scout emerging talent. This talent identification component serves to funnel talent into the USA XVs and Olympic sevens pools, with high-potential athletes invited to the USA Rugby Academy Elite Resident Camps, put on by Serevi in summer 2014.

“We’ll be looking for athletes with an appropriate mix of skill, athleticism and potential to invite to train in an immersive, high-performance environment during our summer residence camps,” said Ric Suggitt, head coach of the Women’s Eagles Sevens. “As we build towards the 2016 Olympics, these camps will be the foundation of finding and developing the next generation of Eagles.”

Programming for the High Performance Training Camps is led by Serevi’s highly-experienced staff of XVs and sevens rugby coaches and former players including IRB Hall of Fame inductee Waisale Serevi, Irish veteran and USA Rugby Men’s Eagles Assistan Coach Justin Fitzpatrick, IRB Sevens World Series record points scorer, Ben Gollings, and National Championship-winning coach Evan Haigh.

The series of High Performance Training Camps are part of the recently announced multi-year partnership between Serevi Rugby and USA Rugby designed to identify top players and provide a specific development pathway to the men’s and women’s U.S. National Teams. The partnership also creates a series of youth development programs which introduce and build a core set of skills applicable to both XVs and sevens rugby and across the youth, high school and collegiate player spectrum, as well as to coaches at all levels.
