2019 TRU & RRRC Champions!

Another 15s season has ended and we’ve crowned our 2019 TRU & RRRC Champions! Winners now move on to the USA Rugby Club Western Championships in Austin, TX on May 18-19, 2019. Read on for the details on all the matches.

Watch all the matches on Youtube.

RRRC – Men’s D1

Early on in the Men’s Division 1 season, Austin and Dallas made it clear that they were looking for the top spot. Austin posted a perfect winning season while Dallas suffered two losses.

Congratulations to the Austin Blacks as they move on to the USA Rugby National Club Semi-Finals and will play Life West.

RRRC – Women’s D1

Houston snatched the top spot in Division one this year, defeating Austin in two of their three meetings. Ironically Austin will be joining Houston at Westerns this year. With the event being held in Austin this year and Life West moving up to the WPL, there wasn’t a clear fourth seed. USA Rugby invited Austin to fill the fourth seed.

Congratulations to HARC as they move on to USA Rugby National Club Quarterfinals and will face the Austin Valkyries.

This may seem a bit odd but it’s a standing precedent that the two teams from the same competitive region face off. This ensures that the top team from the CR advances.

RRRC -Men’s D2

In perhaps the most exciting match on Saturday, Dallas Reds II vs. HARC went into double overtime with HARC slotting a penalty kick to advance to the Sunday match. The second match of the day was also very close with the Austin Blacks besting HURT by one point, 25-24.

On Sunday, Austin took an early lead with 22 points to HARC’s 8 at halftime. HARC mounted a comeback in the second half but the Blacks were able to hold them off. Final score, Austin 29 HARC 18.

Congratulations to Austin Blacks II as they move on to USA Rugby National Club Quarterfinals and will face the Wichita Barbarians.

RRRC -Women’s D2

San Antonio had made their first Championships and on Saturday they proved they were meant to be there as they defeated DARC 64-12. The other match with Austin and Little Rock was a bit closer but Austin returned to the Championship match by doubling Little Rock’s score, 44-22.

On Sunday, it was a tense match with a scoreline that didn’t reflect the level of play…but in the end Austin claimed their third title, 53-17 over San Antonio.

Congratulations to Austin Valkyries II as they move on to USA Rugby National Club Quarterfinals and will face the St. Louis Sabres.

RRRC – Men’s D3

The action started on Saturday morning with Austin Blacks III vs Grand Prairie. The Blacks got out to an early lead and didn’t take their foot off the gas, winning 57-7. The second match of the day pitted HURT II against Alliance. This was a much closer affair with HURT II taking the edge 27-24.

On Sunday, we saw a very spirited match but again the Blacks gained early momentum that HURT couldn’t shake. Austin eventually won 34-17.

Congratulations to the Austin Blacks III as move on to the as they move on to USA Rugby National Club Quarterfinals and will see the Queen City Rams.

With this win, the Austin Blacks became the first team in USA history (that we know of) to send three teams to the USA Rugby Western Championships.

TRU -Women’s D3

The TRU Women’s Division 3 program is still in its infancy and this year McAllen came out on top. At Championships they played an exhibition against the Dallas Reds who compete in Division 2. This was a unique opportunity for McAllen to see the next level!

TRU -Men’s D4

Also in its second year, the Men’s Division 4 final was a fantastic display of growing rugby in Texas. With an incredibly tight scoreline with several lead changes, Alliance II was able to outlast HARC II for the title!
