Biographies:

Nigel Melville - CEO and President of USA Rugby - one of the few players to Captain England on his debut and many believe had his career not been troubled with injury he could have become England's greatest scrum half. Nigel has had a great career playing Rugby representing British Lions and former clubs Otley, Wakefield and Wasps. He retired to coach in 1988 and then became Director of Rugby at Wasps and coached the team to their first professional Premiership title in 1996, followed by three National Cup Finals winning 2. He later moved to Gloucester winning the Zurich Championship Final, Powergen Cup, and topped the Zuich Premiership table by a record 15 clear points. We are extremely grateful to Nigel for affording the time to visit us in Houston and share his coaching skills with the Texas Youth Rugby community.

Jim Synder - Jim currently coaches with the University of Colorado Men's rugby club, most recently helping to lead the Buffaloes to a National Semi-final appearance in 2008. Jim also worked with the USA Rugby U-18 National Team at the 2008 summer camp and assisted with coaching of the West RFU collegiate All-Star team which finished runner-up in the 2008 Collegiate NASC. Jim played his Collegiate rugby at University of Connecticut and club rugby at NYAC prior to moving to Boulder.

We are working on a possible dinner with Nigel and Jim - details to follow soon...

Please RSVP as soon as possible to Phil Beck at wasp14@gmail.com and / or Donovan Early at donovanearley@yahoo.com with approximate number of players and coaches to attend from your club so we can arrange enough food for lunch for everyone.

RUGBY COACHING POSITIONS AVAILABLE
Positions are available for full time and part time coaches in the Houston area and throughout Texas. Due to the rapid growth in High School rugby, demand is outstripping supply in the coaching ranks. Positions may require USA CDP coaching certification and a background check. Compensation varies from program to program.

Immediate openings: Westside High School in Houston - Pack Coach  and backs coach or general assistant

Contact Lowell Locke @713-725-8802

Mens, womens, collegiate and youth teams would welcome especially assistant coaches as rugby enters a new age of specialization. Those who express interest and cannot immediately commit to serve or who cannot find a team to work with will be placed in a pool of available coaches and matched to a program as opportunities present themselves.

It is crucial that we develop a deep pool of potential coaches, administrators, fundraisers and referees if we are to take advantage of the exploding interest in Rugby Union Football. If you can help out now or in the future in any of the above capacities, please contact Jim Wolfinger

St. THOMAS MILLS SETTING RECORDS

For high school football players, spring is the unofficial start of the season, with athletes getting primed for the fall. But St. Thomas' Conor Mills has a different ritual. Mills, a running back for the Eagles in football, starred on the school's rugby team. In fact, Mills, an incoming senior, has played rugby the past three seasons. "I love football, but if I had to choose between the two sports, I'd choose rugby," said Mills, a 17-year-old Magnolia resident. It's no surprise. In football, Mills rushed for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns during his junior season. But he's already considered the finest rugby player in school history and he still has another year to go. Mills, a team captain, owns no less than 14 school records, including single-season records for total points (234), conversions (46), penalty kicks (13) and drop goals (four) all set this year. As for individual matches, he owns several other distinctions, including the most total points 28 in a victory over the Houston Area Rugby Club. Mills' career statistics are even more impressive. He owns or shares the school record in seven categories, including consecutive and total matches (55), total points (438), tries (21), penalty kicks (27) and drop goals (seven). "I don't think we've ever had a player quite like him," said Jim Wolfinger, head rugby coach at St. Thomas. "He's a gifted kid, but he still has an unbelievable work ethic. He trains hard, so he's physically fit. He's also a student of the game."

Mills was introduced to the game by his father, Brett, who also coaches at St. Thomas. It's his passion, which is why he spends countless hours trying to perfect his technique. "I'm always looking for ways to get better," Mills said. It shows. Mills, who plays flyhalf, is usually the best player on the field. "Flyhalf is the equivalent of quarterback in football," Mills said. "You're making a lot of reads and setting up the offense and defense. You have to be on top of things."

Mills has played a pivotal role in St. Thomas success. This season, the Eagles finished 16-6 to break the school record for victories and captured the Texas and Western Region titles. St. Thomas also finished fourth at the USA Rugby National Guard High School Championships in Pittsburgh, Pa., the school's best-ever showing. While Mills had his sights set on claiming the national title, he had a breakout tourney. Mills had three tries, two conversions and 19 points in the Eagles' three games. Mills barely missed a 45-yard drop goal that fell a yard short in a 19-17 loss to Penn of Indiana in the third-place match. "I had an incredible season," Mills said. "It's been a blessing."

Indeed. The honors have poured in for Mills. He was a first-team selection on the All-Greater Houston and Texas Youth Rugby Association's all-South and all-state teams. TYRA also voted him as the player of the year. Meanwhile, Mills was voted most valuable player and offensive player of the year at St. Thomas. Mills also traveled to Denver this month as a member of the Texas Select under-18 squad. But Mills said the highlight of the year was a trip to England for the Millfield International Festival. As captain of the USA under-17 national eam, he gained valuable international experience.N "We went 2-1 in the tournament. We beat Portugal and Romania and lost to England," Mills said. "Making that trip was pretty cool. It gave me a taste of how rugby is played around the world."

While rugby has consumed the past few months, Mills will refocus his attention on football. "It's been a long rugby season," Mills said. "I'm looking forward to football."

In the Womens Collegiate DII Championships, Texas Tech went down to a narrow 8-0 loss against Wayne State [ the eventual winners] but ran into trouble in the 3/4th place playoff game against the #1 seeds Colorado State Univeristy and went down 38-0.

Eight players are new to the program and will embark on their first ever tour with the U-20 National Team in June. There were a lot of really good athletes at the U-20 camp this year and this has made the selection process much more difficult than in previous years - Head Coach Bryn Chivers said of his balanced squad.

Katy YOuth TEAM Wins Green Country HS Rugby Showdown

The Katy, Texas Barbarians captured the championship of the inaugural Green Country High School Rugby Showdown by defeating the Kansas City Junior Blues, 10-8, in a hard fought, physical contest.  The tournament was held near Tulsa, Oklahoma on a chilly and damp weekend (February 23 and 24) and included fourteen teams from five different States - Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado.

In the final game, Kansas City scored midway through the first half to take a 5-0 lead.  However, Katy answered on the last play of the half as Curtis Chaffin, one of three Katy players on the USA Rugby U18 National Team, tied the score with a tremendous run from beyond midfield.  Tim O' Donnell was successful on the conversion to give Katy a 7-5 halftime lead.  The second half was as closely contested as the first, with O' Donnell converting a penalty kick that gave Katy a 10-5 lead.  Kansas City followed with a penalty kick of their own to complete the scoring.  Carlos Egacila, loosehead prop, led the strong forward play during the championship game and was named MVP.

To reach the finals, Katy defeated Alliance (Keller, Texas) 31-0 and Bixby (Oklahoma) 24-5.  Kansas City defeated Broken Arrow (Oklahoma) and Union (Oklahoma) in their other contest. Bixby captured third place with a 20-10 win over Union, while the Gentlemen of Olathe won the bowl championship. Other teams in the tournament included Jenks (Ok), Bartlesville (Ok), Brethren (Ok), Dallas Harlequins, St. Regis Jesuit (Denver), and Heart of America Select Side.

USE OF NON-CIPP REGISTERED PLAYERS

The TRU, as per USA Rugby regulations, requires that in any game [friendly; social, alumni or league] that being is refereed by a  qualified referee has to be CIPP registered with USA Rugby.  This means  that every player must be CIPP enrolled to take the field.  That doesn't mean the forms were mailed, promised, invoiced or getting around to it - it means enrolled and on the USA CIPP listing

Effective Friday February 1st 2008, the TRU and TYRA will be checking the USA Rugby CIPP rosters of each Texas club. In the event that any club has less than 15 players CIPP registered at midday on Friday of each week, the TRU, TYRA and STRR have agreed that the referee assigned to that game [which was planned to be played over that weekend which includes Friday evening] will be re-assigned and the game cancelled. The offending club will also face additional sanctions.

This places the onus on the club administrators to ensure that their clubs are in compliance with the rules of the governing body.
