from USA Rugby:
USA Rugby announced the 2012 Collegiate Rugby 7’s National Championship will return to College Station, Texas, and the campus of Texas A&M University. The event will be held on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1, 2012.
“We are honored to be selected again to host the USA Rugby Collegiate Sevens National Championships,” said Keith Joseph, Sports Club Director for Texas A&M. “We feel confident that we can enhance the tournament program from last year’s great event.”
“Our department is committed to hosting and providing the best quality tournament and service to all of the student athletes, parents and fans. Good luck throughout the season to all of the teams, and we look forward to your arrival in Aggieland this fall,” Joseph added.
“We’re thrilled to take this event back to College Station,” said USA Rugby CEO and President of Rugby Operations Nigel Melville, “having a motivated host who is eager to help us create a top quality event is a huge benefit.”
This tournament will be a major contributor to the selection process for USA Rugby Olympic athletes.
“Being able to see the top athletes from the nation’s best collegiate rugby 7’s teams in one location will be important for our coaches and selectors – both for the Collegiate All American 7’s team as well as for the Olympic 7’s program,” stated Melville.
Texas A&M University was the location for last year’s 7’s championship where Life University and Norwich University were named champions.
24 men’s teams and 16 women’s teams will compete for the shot at a true Collegiate National Championship. Qualification will be through a series of automatic qualifier tournaments and awarding of at-large selections to the field.
More details on the list of qualifying tournaments will be forthcoming.
