The HUNS Rugby Football Club hosted two tournaments this past weekend, The RugbyNinja.com Elite 7s Invitational and the 17th Annual Bloodfest 7s. Both tournaments took place concurrently at Northeast Metro Park in Austin. A total of 47 teams took part in the day’s events with upwards of 2,000 making their way to the park for great rugby, good fun, and typical HUNS hospitality.
In the RugbyNinja.com 7’s, Bonobo RC and Little Rock RFC both went through pool play undefeated and met in the championship. Bonobo squeaked out a win over a surprisingly tough Little Rock squad 21-17. Brendan Pahulu received man-of-the-match. These two teams are the early front runners in the upcoming Red River Rugby 7s qualifiers.
The Bloodfest 7s had five different pools of play (Open, Social, Super Social, Women’s Open and Women’s Social). The winner of the Open, and thus the winner of Bloodfest, was Prickly Pear RC (associated with Alamo City RFC) who outlasted Dallas RFC for the Bloodfest Cup. The Plate was won by host HUNS RFC, with the Bowl being won by Lone Star RC out of the Woodlands. The Super Social was won by San Antonio. On the women’s side, the growth of women’s rugby in Texas was illustrated by the need for two pools. The winner of the Bloodfest cup was the Mind Ruckers (based out of Dallas) over the Blue Bonnets (based out of Austin). On the Social side, the winner was Freaks in Cleats (based out of San Marcos).
