The first of three RRRC qualifying 7s tournaments took place at Burr Field in Austin, TX on June 27th. The theme of the men’s side seemed to be “players unavailable” which tested the depth and versatility of many of the sides. The women’s side welcomed two brand new teams, HEB and HARC who rounded out the competition to an interesting five teams.

Men

1st. place (6 pts)

Austin Blacks – Dominant all day, heaps of depth, emerging as the team to beat once again. The Blacks have won the first two tournaments in which they played this season. Both tournaments were played in Austin. Will they travel as strong to Ft. Worth and Norman, OK? How will Levi Kereti’s Red Card impact their roster for the next two tournaments?

2nd place (4 pts)

Little Rock – Little Rock looked poised, patient and disciplined all day. The next two tournaments are less of a travel burden. This well coached side could make some waves in the series.

3rd place (2 pts)

Prickly Pears – This South TX based team played well all day and won when it needed to. Missing 2 players due to Air Force Obligations, this team will be a lot of fun to watch this season and could surprise some people

4th place (1 pt)

Ft. Worth – The Ft. Worth based side cruised through pool play but had to play with a 10 man roster for the bulk of the day due to 2 injuries. They won’t be happy with this result and will look to rebound at home in two weeks.

5th place

Tribe – New team with familiar 7s faces from Shreveport, DARC and OKC. This side could be dangerous if they can gel despite not being able to train together

6th place

HEB – Young team of 2nd generation Pacific Island Expats with heaps of size and flair. They play an exciting brand of rugby and are really fun to watch. They will get better with experience

7th place

Oklahoma Elite – New team consisting of recent OU, Lindenwood and Tulsa players. This team has fitness and speed to compete with anyone

8th place

Austin Huns – Missing some key players, the Huns seemed to get better in every match they played.

9th place

Dallas Reds – 5 key players were missing, this side will have a whole new look in two weeks and should not be underestimated

10th place

HARC – This team seemed to be missing some key players that have historically played high level 7s. If those players travel to Ft. Worth and Norman, HARC will be much improved.

Overall Standings

Austin Blacks 6
Little Rock 4
Prickly Pears 2
Ft Worth 1
Tribe 0
HEB 0
OK Elite 0
Austin Huns 0
HARC 0
Dallas Reds 0

Note: The Dallas Harlequins are expected to join the series for the second and third stops as well as a few others.

Women

1st place (6 pts)

Austin Valkyries – In a dominant display, the Valks did not lose a game all day.

2nd place (4 pts)

HARC – Despite traveling light, HARC earned a place in the Championship final. Some additional depth could make this team a contender for the top spot.

3rd place (2 pts)

Little Rock – Much like the Men’s side… or any side that has Jules McCoy’s stamp on it, Little Rock play a disciplined, patient brand of rugby with few unforced errors.

4th place (1 pt)

HEB – This team is very young but brims with potential. Inexperience led to penalties at times but one would expect this side to continue to improve with experience as the competition progresses.

5th place

Oklahoma – This team traveled with zero substitutions, played on short rest and battled in each minute of every match. If there was a “spirit of Rugby” award, this side would have more than earned it. Hopefully having the next two tournaments closer to home will help this side find some depth.

Overall Standings

Austin Knights 6
HARC 4
Little Rock 2
HEB 1
Oklahoma 0
Griffins 0
American Rugby Pro Training Center (ARPTC) 0

Note: The Little Rock based Women’s ODA and Griffins team will be joining the series in the Second and Third stops.
