2015 RRRC Qualifier #2 Results – Reds & ARPTC Win

The second of three RRRC qualifying 7s tournaments took place this weekend in Fort Worth, TX. The Dallas Reds conquered the hosts Fort Worth in the men’s final while the newcomers ARPTC defeated the Austin Valkyries in the women’s division. All eyes now turn to the last event as it will be the decider on the two men’s seeds and one women’s seed to Nationals.

Austin Blacks:

After winning the first tournament and winning their pool yesterday, the Austin Blacks were slated to play the winner of the 8/9 seed play in game (9 team tournament) in the Quarterfinals. Despite losing both pool play matches, Prickly Pear defeated HEB in the play in game and took that momentum to defeat the Blacks in the quarterfinal thus knocking the top seed out of contention for points in the second of three qualifier tournaments. Prickly Pear finished the tournament in 4th place and the Blacks 5th.

Dallas Reds:

The Reds were missing a ton of players in the first tournament mostly due to representative 7s obligations (there were 10 roster changes between tournaments) and finished an uncharacteristic 9th place. They emerged out of pool play as the 7 quarter final seed after losing a coin toss to settle seeding between Fort Worth who emerged out of pool play with the same record, tries scored and point differential as the Reds. The Reds defeated Oklahoma Elite in the Quarters and Little Rock in the Semis to earn their spot in the finals against the team that they lost an earlier coin toss and went on to win the 2nd qualifier.

Fort Worth:

Ft. Worth were disappointed with their 4th place performance in the 1st qualifier (Fort Worth received 3rd place points as the 3rd place team was not eligible for qualifier points in the first tournament) . They played 5 matches with only 10 players due to sustaining early injuries to their starting wing and one of their half backs. Fort Worth dropped their first pool play match to OK Elite but bounced back and emerged out of pool play as the 5 seed. They defeated #4 seed Austin Huns in the QF and Prickly Pear in the Semis. The Dallas Reds  defeated Fort Worth in the finals.

Little Rock:

After a second place finish in the first qualifier, Little Rock was, once again, the most consistent team on the day. They were the only team to emerge out of their respective pool as the top seed and not slip up in the Quarter Finals in which they beat Tribe Rugby. Little Rock was defeated by the Dallas Reds in the semi finals and earned a 3rd place finish by defeating Prickly Pear in the consolation final.

On the Women’s side, Little Rock based ARPTC dominated on the day defeating every team by at least 30 points and eventually unseated Austin in the finals. The other Little Rock team also performed well as they bested the Griffins in the 3rd/4th match by 2 points, 14-12.

All is not lost for Austin though as they can punch their ticket to Iowa with a semi-final showing at the next tournament.
