USA Rugby has announced the implementation of a new tackle height law, set to take effect on September 1, 2024. This adjustment follows a successful trial during the spring friendlies in the Midwest Senior Club competitions and aims to enhance player safety across all levels of the game. All TRU matches will adhere to this new tackle height law.
Infographic and Game Management Guidelines Released
In conjunction with this law change, USA Rugby has released a detailed one-page infographic that outlines the new tackle height regulations. This document, developed in collaboration with Advantage Referees, includes essential Game Management Guidelines to assist coaches and referees with the law’s implementation.
The law modifies the definition of a ‘high tackle,’ lowering it from the line of the shoulders to the base of the sternum. It is important to note that, except in cases of repeated infringement, this change is not expected to increase the number of yellow or red cards issued. The World Rugby Head Contact Process will continue to be used for any incidents involving head or neck contact.
Video Resources Available for Coaches and Referees
To further support our members, USA Rugby has produced a video resource featuring insights from Coach Colm Finnegan (IRFU) and Referee Keith Lewis (World Rugby). The video provides an explanation of the new law and addresses common questions regarding its application. This resource is now available for viewing.
Upcoming Video Presentation: Submit Your Questions
In preparation for the new membership year, USA Rugby will host a video presentation featuring coaches and referees from the High Performance Pathways. This presentation will address any questions regarding the new tackle height law or other law changes effective from September 1, 2024. Members are encouraged to submit their queries by Friday, August 23. The presentation will be released in the week leading up to the law’s implementation.
