Update Regarding TRU and USAR Status

By now many of you have heard that USA Rugby filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy yesterday. Rather than filing under Chapter 7 (liquidation), the Chapter 11 (restructuring) filing was made possible by an additional infusion of cash from World Rugby. Even so, the future of USA Rugby is uncertain.

Since USA Rugby announced the creation of a reorganization task force in December, the leadership of the Geographic Unions have been meeting to coordinate a response. The possibility that USA Rugby might not survive in its current form was always considered. We have been working on plans to collectively manage the club game in the United States, whether that be under a reorganized USA Rugby or some new entity or partnership of the GUs. The USA Rugby Board has explicitly encouraged us to continue this work as part of the Chapter 11 process. The collegiate conferences and youth SROs are doing the same.

Here in Texas, we are fortunate to have some of the strongest clubs and competitions in the country. Our referees association is the best in the nation. The TRU is in excellent financial condition, and all monies owed us by USA Rugby have been received. While we know a few clubs have struggled of late, and many individuals have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, our overall membership is growing. We are positioned to emerge from the current crises stronger than ever. Whatever happens at the national level, rugby will continue to be played and thrive in the Texas Rugby Union.

Stay safe, support your mates, and plan now for a bright future.

With you,

Kirk Tate
President, Texas Rugby Union
